Finding local activities
Do you want to find some healthy activities in your local area, but don't know where to start? The following tips might help you:
- Call your local council or check their website. Many local councils offer programs that are helpful to people wanting to achieve or maintain a healthy weight. These programs are often free or available at discounted rates.
- Check the Heart Foundation website to see if there is a local walking group that you could join. If there isn't a walking group in your area, you could consider starting your own Heart Foundation walking group.
- Contact your local YMCA or YWCA to see if they offer health and wellbeing programs and services that might assist you in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. Find the contact details for your local YMCA and your local YWMC.
- Some state and territory governments organise programs and group activities locally.
- Some non-government organisations run services and programs in the community.
- The Australian Sports Commission has developed Find a club to assist you to find a sporting club you might like to join in your State or Territory
- Check the classifieds section of your local paper. Some local activities and programs might be advertised here.
- Finally, you could think about organising your own activity with your friends. Perhaps a weekly game of tennis or a regular walk together.
