  • Control your weight
  • Maintain or improve your movement and independence
  • Improve your social interactions and your quality of life
  • Reduce stress and anxiety
  • Reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and some cancers
  • Build and maintain healthy bones, muscles and joints
  • Reduce your risk of falling and being injured in a fall.

Physical activity can also improve the health of people with chronic conditions such as stroke or arthritis and help to manage pain. If you have a chronic health problem, ask your health professional for advice on what kinds of and how much physical activity is right for you.

It is important to check with your health professional before starting a new physical activity program, particularly if you have existing health problems or have been inactive for a while.
