A happy senior couple dancingThere are four main types of physical activity that have been shown to keep older people healthy. They are:

  • Moderate fitness activities
  • Strength training
  • Flexibility activities
  • Balancing activities.

Moderate fitness activities help to keep your heart, lungs and blood vessels healthy. Examples include brisk walking, tennis, water aerobics, and mopping and vacuuming.

Strength activities help your muscles and bones stay strong and make it easier for you to do daily tasks as you get older. Some examples are weight, strength or resistance training exercises, climbing stairs and moderate yard work.

Flexibility activities help you to move more easily. They include gentle reaching, bending and stretching. Examples include bowls, yoga and Tai Chi.

Balancing activities will improve your balance and help to prevent falls. Examples of balancing activities include standing on one foot or walking heel to toe.

It’s good to do different types of physical activity. A variety of different types of physical activities improves your health and fitness, keeps things interesting and helps you stay motivated. You might want to use a physical activity planner to make some plans about what you might do and to keep track of how active you are.
