A group of kids playing outsideIf your child is overweight, the best thing you can do is aim to keep them at the same weight until they grow.1 You can discuss this with your health professional  and work out a plan to encourage your child to enjoy a variety of healthy foods and drinks, limit intake of unhealthy foods and drinks, limit screen time and get more physical activity.

Only those children who are obese or who have problems linked with being overweight, such as high blood pressure, should be encouraged to lose weight. And they should only lose weight deliberately under strict medical supervision. If you are not sure if your child fits in this category, ask your health professional.

Overweight children are at increased risk of becoming overweight as adults.1 So don’t ignore the fact that your child is overweight, but help them to make some simple dietary and physical activity changes that will stop them from putting on more weight. And remember, there are health professionals who can tailor a plan of action for your child.
