Having children is rewarding – and challenging. Regarding weight, some challenges parents face include:

One other challenge is that of 'pester power'. It might be hard, but parents need to set boundaries for their children. They need to be role models to counter the marketing of unhealthy food and drinks. 

Here are some tips for managing the challenge:

  • Always carry a bottle of water (tap water is fine) when you’re away from home.
  • Pack healthy snacks for children whenever you plan to be away from home for more than an hour or two.
  • Offer (and buy) children only healthy snacks.
  • If they pester you for unhealthy foods and drinks, learn to say no.

If children learn from an early age that healthy food is better and enjoyable, they’re more likely to make eating well a lifetime habit.
