Pregnant woman walkingIf you are pregnant, physical activity is still good for you. In fact, it is recommended. Some people used to believe that pregnant women should rest up. But nowadays, research suggests that pregnant women feel better and are more likely to have healthy babies if they eat a healthy diet, do regular physical activity and gain the appropriate amount of weight while they’re pregnant.

So if you are pregnant:

  • Think of movement as an opportunity, not an inconvenience
  • Be active every day in as many ways as you can
  • Accumulate 150 to 300 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity every week
  • Avoid doing anything too physically challenging (such as playing squash or netball, aerobics, jogging or fast cycling) unless your doctor or midwife has cleared you to do so.

Remember to consult your health professional about your exercise regime. If your health professional has advised you that your blood pressure is high they may limit your physical activity.
