The ACT Government Health Directorate funds a number of activities aimed at reducing the prevalence of risk factors for chronic disease, including overweight and obesity, to improve health and wellbeing and minimise the burden of preventable disease. These include policy development and implementation, health promotion and prevention programs, and social marketing campaigns.

The Beyond Today - it's up to you social marketing campaign has been developed locally to encourage the uptake of healthy lifestyle behaviours and smoking cessation among ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.  

The Live Lighter program is targeted at Australian adults and aims to increase awareness of the link between being overweight and chronic disease, while promoting healthy eating and regular physical activity. 

 

‘Kids at play’ logo

Kids at Play is all about advancing the health and wellbeing of ACT children aged 0 – 5 years by promoting healthy eating and physical activity to families and the early childhood sector.

‘Healthy food @ sport’ logo

Healthy Food@Sport aims to increase the healthy food choices available to children and young people and to promote water as the drink of choice.  

‘Ride or walk to school’ logo

Ride or Walk to School aims to increase walking, cycling and use of public transport among ACT school students.  

‘Healthier work’ logo

The Healthier Work service within WorkSafe ACT aims to build the capacity of workplaces to develop and implement programs, policies and practices that lead to healthy working environments and sustained employee healthy lifestyle changes.

The Health Promotion Grants Program aims to improve the health of people in the ACT by encouraging health promotion partnerships and supporting targeted programs that promote and facilitate healthy lifestyles, policies and environments, and build the capacity of individuals, groups and communities to make healthy choices. 

Find an ACT health service provides information about and allows you to search for specific health services, practitioners and after hours health care options in Canberra and surrounding regions. This service is also accessible on smartphones, iPhone, iPad and tablet devices using a free download application from the App store (for Apple devices) and Google Play (for Android devices). Users with an alternative internet-enabled mobile device can also visit: www.findahealthservice.act.gov.au/m via their internet browser to access the application.

Find a Health Service currently has a range of services listed, including: Aged Care, Mental Health, GP's, Pharmacies, Pathology Centres, Sexual Health, Hospitals, Allied Health, Support Groups, and Telephone Services. Find a Health Service also lists a wide range of local health practitioners, who can be searched on by: the practitioner's name, medical speciality, ethnicity or language spoken.
