Setting realistic goals for achieving or maintaining a healthy weight is an important first step. It helps you focus and start planning for change. Having a clear goal in mind helps you to stay motivated when you face the challenges life inevitably brings.

Your goal might be to reach a specific weight, or to lose or gain five kilos. It might be to look and feel better, have more energy, be able to play sport or feel more comfortable in your clothes. 

Your goals might be about things you are going to start doing or try to stop doing. For example, you might make it a goal to start eating five serves of vegetables every day, or to swap your afternoon biscuit with your cup of tea to some carrot sticks and low-fat hummus. You might make it a goal to increase the amount or the intensity of the physical activity you do. Perhaps you could do this by leaving home a bit earlier and parking a bit further away from your work, or joining a sporting club, or meeting a friend for a social game of basketball.

So, start by defining your goals, following our tips for setting realistic and achievable goals and reading our guidance on setting a goal weight.

To help you set your goals and keep track of your progress you can download and print off the Healthy Weight Guide goal setting form to carry around with you or leave on the fridge.  Alternatively, if you register with the Healthy Weight Guide website, you can record your goals and update them online as often as you like to check your progress.
